The first newsletter, edited by Ike
Kirshner who, “For lack of a better name, … chose The
Whirlwind for the newsletter’s name.” He went on
to write, “The Whirlwind was an
early and popular Wright engine and was used to give many of the early
flying machines their go! Since a newsletter is a major ingredient to
give a club go, I thought the name was appropriate. But if you don’t
like it, please feel free to make a suggestion, we will decide by
popular vote.” The name seems to have survived criticism. Early
editions of the Whirlwind, the
club’s newsletter, indicate that the members were working on the first
by-laws and rules and regulations for the governing of the Beltzville
Flying Machine Society.
